The Top 5 Worst Films of 2014

Wow, to be able to write a list like this makes me feel like an actual blogger. I used to look at people with confusion when they would argue over a film and discuss just how awful it was, because I'd never really watched a film that I disliked. I guess I used to watch so little films that I only watched what I knew I would like, which is what I love so much about this blog. It's opened my eyes to a huge array of films that I never would have watched before. Some of them I've loved, and others, not so much.

So here is me, jumping on the Top 5 bandwagon with the Top 5 worst films I've seen that came out this year.

What If (2014)

You know, I never even got round to reviewing this. I couldn't even try now, I can't remember what this film was even about. When we saw it at the cinema and ordered our tickets, the guy actually said 'what?'. He forgot the film existed, and that the cinema was showing it. It wasn't a bad film by any means, but it was just entirely forgettable, just a few months after I originally saw it.

The Inbetweeners 2 (2014)

Another film I never got round to reviewing! I absolutely loved the Inbetweeners TV Show, and was so excited when the first film came out. My brother and I even introduced our parents to it, who also loved it, even if they didn't understand some of the phrases. I think too much time passed between the first film and its sequel, and although The Inbetweeners 2 started off fairly strong, after half an hour I was bored and witnessed one of the worst endings to a film I've ever seen.

The Monuments Men (2014)

I quite often get my own way when my fiance and I go to the cinema. He doesn't mind really and will sit through nearly anything, like me. However, I thought earlier in the year we should really go to see something of his choice, and he chose The Monuments Men. I didn't protest too much, war films aren't really my thing but with that cast, I thought it would be okay. This, sadly, was a complete snore fest, and even my fiance turned to my halfway through and said 'sorry, we'll see whatever you want to next time'!.

Tammy (2014)

It wasn't very long ago that I included Tammy in a mini reviews post on here. I love Melissa McCarthy and think Bridesmaids and The Heat are comedy gold, but Tammy really fell short of the mark. She played the kind of character that she plays best, but without another lead or a decent supporting cast, she just came across as irritating. A shame, but it definitely hasn't put me off her.

Sex Tape (2014)

Oh Jenna, I blame you for this one! Not the film itself of course, that would be a little harsh, you can't be completely at fault, but it was your choice for us to see this! You can read just about anyone's review of Sex Tape and my opinions are the same, I don't think I ever found a positive one. Stupid characters doing stupid things, none of which are funny. But to be fair to the film, the credits were really funny.

After seeing Allie had started this post I decided to work out what my Top 5 worst movies of 2014 were.  After finding a list of all movies released in 2014 I was gutted to spot how many movies I have missed this year (although in my defence it has been a busy year!).  I have now doubled my 'watch list' just from films in 2014.  So this list is my Top 5 worst films of the one I have actually seen....

Need for Speed (2014)

Sorry Allie, this film just wasn't for me (and in payback, I blame you for this one because you told me it was really good and that I should watch it! It was really good! I can't believe you had to be forced to see this but you willingly went and saw Transformers...).  The story was terrible, the plot holes were huge and ridiculous and there was no chemistry between any of the cast.  So disappointed as I am a big fan of Aaron Paul (in Breaking Bad he is amazing and steals the show for me most of the time) but in this there was nothing about him.

Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

If you have seen my review of this you will already know I didn't like it.  The story was terrible, the cast worse and the dialogue cringeworthy.  It was too long and the action scenes moved so fast you had no idea what was going on, who was the good guy/bad guy/robot/dinosaur/human and ultimately by the end I didn't care anyway.

Lucy (2014)

A lot of people have been raving about this film (I haven't yet managed to review it myself) and I'm not sure if I'm missing something.  The acting was great, Scarlett Johannsen has the ability to act without saying a word which worked well for this but I kept expected the story to start, it felt like an introduction to the real story, which never came.  Not sure I thought it was that bad, just that from previous reviews I expected more so ended up disappointed.

Sex Tape (2014)

No need to say much as Allie said pretty much everything above but I will say This. Is. A. Sh*t. Movie.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Probably my biggest disappointment of 2014, mostly because I had really high hopes for it but I was let down.  As my childhood favourite, I was willing this to be great but it was far from it.  No chemistry, scary evil looking Turtles, random useless characters and terrible dialogue.  Music was great, but that is all that was great about this lifeless reboot.

What about you though? What films disappointed you this year?

The Slasher Cast-a-Thon

Oh, wow. I know I say this every time, but this might be my favourite Blogathan yet. The ever-creative Dell at Dell on Movies has masterfully put together a fun Blogathon for us to take part in this October, cleverly named the Slasher Cast-a-Thon.  I am sooo excited about this, I can't even tell you!!

Here are the rules:

1. Our slasher is already cast for us. He is the most evil, sadistic, brutal person you could possibly imagine. Let's just leave it at that.
2. Pick anywhere from 6 to 12 movie characters whom you would like to see murdered for one reason, or another. Maybe it was that annoying sidekick in a comedy, or the person who lost the wedding ring in your favorite rom-com. For each person you pick, explain why you'd like to see them killed. However, there are some caveats.

A. The character cannot be from a horror movie.

B. The character must NOT have died in whatever movie they were in.

C. The character cannot be the main antagonist (villain) of their movie. That would be too easy, we're supposed to hate them.
3. Pick one movie character as your "Final Girl," or the person who will survive and slay our slasher. Though I would prefer it to be a female, in keeping with genre norms, it doesn't necessarily have to be. In any event, explain why you chose this person. Tell us what makes them survivor material. There are some restrictions on this person, as well.
A. The character cannot be from a horror movie.
B. The character must NOT have or be implied to have sex during their movie. (Remember that stuff about the virginal heroine, right?)
C. The character cannot have killed or implied to have killed someone during her movie.
4. Include a link to this post.

OK so it seems this cast-a-thon was a lot harder than I first thought it would be.  Me and Allie decided to work on it during our last movie night and even with two heads over one we still struggled.  There are probably thousands of characters out there we could use, its just remembering them!

Anyway, this is what we came up with:

Annie/Jay (Cameron Diaz/Jason Segal) - Sex Tape (2014)
This is as simple as they deserve to die because they are so damn stupid.  They made this huge debacle out of getting the iPads back when they could have said, "could we borrow your iPad as we sent something to it by mistake" Done! - Slightly shorter film mind!  Basically, they would be the characters in the movie that would make the stupid decision that would get them killed (think Tatum 'doesn't fit through a cat flap' from Scream or any character that thinks going upstairs is a good idea.  You get the idea!

Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) - Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)
So, Connor Mead is this good-looking, smooth-talking ladies man, and every woman who sees him wants to sleep with him. Err, not me, thanks. In fact Connor, you're so irritating and full of self importance, that you're going to die in this made-up slasher film you now find youself in. You won't even see it coming.

Lex Murphy (Ariana Richards) - Jurassic Park (1993)
This girl only survived Jurassic Park because people had to keep dragging her out of danger but throughout she was ridiculously irritating.  To the point that I feel ANY serial killer would take her out just to stop her freaking out!!

Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) - Transformers (2007)
I could have picked several (any) of Megan Fox's characters, because she winds me up for countless reasons. I can't even bring myself to watch the new Turtles movie thanks to her. I picked Mikaela from Transformers for this post, in the hope that an AWOL transformer might actually kill her.

Claudia (Aubrey Peeples) - Sharknado (2013)
Solely because she SHOULD have died in this movie and didn't.  She was a miserable mean cow who smiled when she thought her brother was going to die, issues much!  I'm not too fussed on how she would die but a flying shark wouldn't hurt...

Portia Nathan (Tina Fey) - Admission (2013)
This lady is so heartless that she won't even mind that I've included her in this list. She's presented with her long-lost adopted son, and keeps a straight poker face. Honestly, woman! Let's hope in our little make believe slasher movie her son turns out to be the bad guy and takes her out.

Surviver
Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) - Mean Girls (2004)
If she can survive Regina George and the Plastics then surely she can survive ANYTHING!  She also grew up in the African bush jungle where it is survival of the fittest and not only that, she survived public high school with the ultimate bullies.  Although, I don't think it's officially stated that she is virgin but growing up in the bush I think it can be assumed.  Cady would survive our slasher flick.

Dell, this has been one of the hardest but most fun blogathons we've ever taken part in, and we really hope you do something like this again next year. That gives us a whole year to put a longer list together!

Review: Sex Tape (2014)

So, at the last Flick Chick movie night we watch 2 full movies but that was not enough for us apparently because the next day we up and trotted off to the cinema to see a third film!!  The only film that fit the times we needed was Sex Tape and I actually did want to see it so win win! Or not....

I was on the fence. I actually really like Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal, but after the reviews came flooding in I think I would have given this a miss if it weren't for our trip out.

Sex Tape follows Annie (Cameron Diaz) and Jay (Jason Segal), who in trying to spice up their sex life make a (3hour?) sex tape.  The next morning however, they find that the tape had automatically synced to the iPads they have given out to people (who has this kind of money!).  Including the mailman, their best friends Robby (Rob Corddry) and Tess (Ellie Kemper) and Annie's boss, Hank (Rob Lowe).  The race is on the get the iPads back before the people realise the video is on there.

I kind of knew this wasn't going to be that good when I discovered the premise of the storyline, I mean who has money to buy multiple iPads on a regular basis and then GIVE the other ones away, not sell them.  Forgetting that, that is ridiculously expensive, its just a terrible excuse for the writers to create the situation that they need for the storyline.  I could have happily forgiven this hiccup had the rest of the story been funny, witty, clever, or even just one of the above.  The storyline is so contrived that you would assume they had a brilliant mid-section or ending that they just had to get to by any means necessary, but no.  The rest of the film continues to be completely forced with stupid dialogue used to get the lead characters into even more ridiculous situations, that are less than funny.

It's just a really lazy concept! There could have surely been a more realistic spin on the iPad thing, surely. Most of the funny moments were in the trailer, but I will never stop laughing at the line 'Nobody understands the cloud!', I will always find that funny!

The 'sexy' scenes were neither sexy nor funny (not sure which they were aiming for) but just uncomfortable and awkward which made the majority of the film pretty hard to watch. They are most definitely not safe for anywhere. (NSFA??)

This appeared to be a very long episode of a sitcom rather than a movie with each scene becoming more stupid than the last.  I am a huge fan of Diaz and Segal but even they couldn't save this for me.  The best part of the film was the end credits, which was the first part in the movie when I actually laughed.

It was a good idea in principal, and it can't have done too badly for itself because the cinema was fairly busy for a Saturday afternoon a few weeks after release. This just didn't work for me, and like Jenna said, the credits are actually brilliant!

Overall, I would suggest see it for yourself, you might like it.  I wouldn't rush though!! Nope, don't rush. Wait till the DVD is mega cheap in some sale, then get drunk with your friends and watch it. Agreed
