Thursday Movie Picks: Teen Comedies

This week’s theme is right up my street! If you’re not familiar with the Thursday Movie Picks, it’s an amazing thing hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves. Each week brings a new theme, and all you need to do is pick 3 movies that fit the bill to discuss. This week is Teen Comedies, which is a really difficult week for me. Difficult because teen comedies are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me! It’s okay to still enjoy them when you’re well into your twenties, right?

I could have happily put together a list of 20 movies this week, but I’ll behave, and pick my favourite 3.

van-wilder-ryan-reynolds

I’m not ranking these three or anything, but if I could, Van Wilder would be my number 1, for so many reasons! This is Ryan Reynolds at his best, playing the most popular kid in college who doesn’t ever want to graduate. It’s your typical cheesy story, but man, I just love it so much. I haven’t seen the other Van Wilder films though, strangely enough.

ferris-buellers-day-off

It shames me to admit that I only saw Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for the first time recently, but if you read my review, you’ll know that already. Oh, how I wish I could go back in time to watch this again and again. Ferris pulls a sicky to get a day off school, and much fun ensues when his Principal and Sister try to catch him out. I wonder sometimes if this film influenced the cartoon Phineas & Ferb in any way?

easy-a-emma-stone

Hoping that it’s acceptable to still love teen comedies in your twenties...have I ever mentioned how much I love Easy A? I can’t even pretend I saw this in my teens, as I was...21 when it came out. Oops. Emma Stone is in top form here, using the school’s rumour mill to her advantage when she spreads a lie about her virginity.

  1. Van Wilder! I forgot about that film, but I love it. "I want to explore the great American sport of muff diving." lmao

I really enjoyed Easy A as well and I'm in my 20's, so no worries!

  2. LOL, I'm 30...and teen comedies (done right) are still awesome, so don't worry!

Love Ferris...so much! Easy A isn't perfect, but Emma Stone is...like she's SO PERFECT!

Ugh, Emma Stone is just perfect in everything! I have such a girl crush on her...

  3. Easy A deserves to be a classic, if only for Emma Stone's great performance.

Van Wilder... I don't really like that movie all that much, but I LOVE looking at Ryan Reynolds, so I will never turn it off if I come across it on TV. And he's really funny in it, too.

Ferris Bueller is, of course, a deserved classic.

And it is absolutely okay to love teen flicks in your twenties! Otherwise, since I'm 31, I'm screwed LOL!

    1. Why can't we all just been teens again for a few days to go back and watch all these again in our prime, haha?!

  5. Love Ferris! Love Easy A! because they're not just gross out comedies and have a point of view but don't ruin the comedy by trying to be too important about it. Van Wilder is a lot of goofy fun, the sequels are proof of diminishing returns so don't feel that you've missed anything by not seeing them. Great picks.

    1. I love a good silly comedy every now and again but you're right, too many rely on gross-out moments for their laughs and it does get old. Thanks!

  6. There is no age limit on teen comedies. I am 40-something, and I still like them. ;-) I'd never heard of Van Wilder.

  7. I know a guy who looks a bit like Ryan Reynolds, lucky him I guess...

You feel shame for having only seen Ferris Bueller recently? I haven't even seen it! For shame, eh?

    1. I was about to ask you for photographic evidence, and then I had to remind myself that I'm getting married next year, lol.
You haven't seen it?! Do it! Now!

  9. I'm almost 30, and still enjoy teen comedies (like Fisti said, when made right) as much as the typical teenager

The only movie you mentioned that I haven't seen is VAN WILDER, and only because I'm not a big fan of Ryan Reynolds. Too many TV specials and direct-to-DVD crap ruined any chance to prove that he can act for me.

I love Easy A and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, I'm still shocked that you've never seen Ferris Bueller until recently...I used to watch it all the time growing up, surprisingly I never tried copying him to skip school hahaha.

    1. Aw, he does have some bad film choices at times but he's really good, given the chance. Have you ever seen Buried? He's brilliant in that :)
It was only recently that I even heard the name Ferris Bueller, funnily enough, although since I've watched it, I've come to realise just how many other films and TV shows make reference to it!

  10. Van Wilder sucks me in every time I catch it on cable. Stupid, crappy movie, but so grand at the same time. I remember loving Easy A, but I just don't remember much of it. Emma Stone is where it's at.

I need to see Easy A again, I've only seen it once so I can't remember too much of it!

  11. I can't say or read enough good things about Ferris Bueller. Love that movie. Easy A is awesome, as well. Never watched Van Wilder all the way through. Tried once, started late at night and fell asleep pretty quickly. Just never bothered going back to it. I keep hearing it's good, so I might. Great picks.
