Thursday Movie Picks: Movies with Memorable Declarations/Confessions of Love

It's Thursday! Time for Movie Picks. If you're new to this, Thursday Movie Picks is a fantastic series hosted by Wanderer at Wandering Through the Shelves, where each week she picks a theme and we all choose 3 movies that we feel fit.

This week’s theme is Movies with Memorable Declarations/Confessions of Love, and it’s also the first theme this month where I haven’t needed to Google what it meant (doh!). I’m going to try to make it through this whole post without mentioning that two-worded movie beginning with L and A...I think I’ve used it twice so far for this series...stay strong Allie, stay strong…

Anyway, I’m going with 2 classics and a personal favourite this week. Here goes!

I shamefully watched When Harry Met Sally (1989) for the first time last year, and it quickly became one of my favourite rom coms. Not only does it have that classic scene we all seem to know whether we’ve seen the movie or not (“I’ll have what she’s having”) but it also has one of the sweetest declarations of love ever, as Harry (Billy Crystal) runs through the streets of New York to finally tell Sally (Meg Ryan) how he really feels.

“I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour-and-a-half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that when I spend a day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes; and I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night.”

This week is proof that I will take any excuse I can to talk about Star Wars. In my defence though, one of the biggest highlights of watching the original movies was watching the romance between Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) grow. Never did I think I could really fall for Harrison Ford, until that cocky smuggler Han Solo stole every scene he was in. Let’s not forget that moment in Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) when Princess Leia finally gave in and told Han how she felt.

“I love you.”
“I know.”

Moving swiftly on to guilty pleasure territory! I’ve lost count of how many times my fiance and I have watched The Proposal (2009), it’ll just never get boring. Plus, 3 years ago when we were in New York on holiday flicking through channels in our hotel room, this was on! Funnily, the very next day we went to the top of the Rockefeller Center and he proposed to me! There you go, off topic rambles from me there. Anyway. Andrew’s (Ryan Reynolds) confession of love to Margaret (Sandra Bullock) at the end of the movie was equal parts sweet and hilarious.

“Three days ago, I loathed you. I used to dream about you getting hit by a cab. Then we had our little adventure up in Alaska and things started to changed. Things changed when we kissed. And when you told me about your tattoo. Even when you checked me out when we were naked. But I didn't realize any of this, until I was standing alone... in a barn... wifeless. Now, you could imagine my disappointment when it suddenly dawned on me that the woman I love is about to be kicked out of the country. So Margaret, marry me, because I'd like to date you.”

  1. Ha! I also went with Empire Strikes Back, it's so fitting lol. When Harry Met Sally is popular today so far, and I've never seen it.

    1. It's the most perfect non-conventional choice this week!
Ohh WHMS is such a good movie! I only saw it last year though so I can't really be that shocked, haha.

  4. I thought Harry & Sally would be popular today but I'm really surprised by Empire Strike Back's ubiquity. Love the first, and that's a great scene, indifferent to the second but it fits well. The Proposal is a charmer, I'd say it's a bit preposterous but then so are most romantic comedies and some romantic dramas as well.

There's so many to chose from and I really had expected to see my first pick show up more but then Empire blindsided me so you never know what's going to capture the collective imagination.

Pride & Prejudice (2005)-Lovely adaptation of the Austen classic with Keira Knightley & Matthew MacFayden well matched as the headstrong Elizabeth Bennett and the reserved Mr. Darcy who secretly loves her. They are surrounded by a perfect supporting cast.

*Memorable Declaration-During a sweeping rainstorm in an isolated pavilion the drenched Darcy declares that he loves Lizzie most ardently!

Last of the Mohicans (1992)-Exciting, intense beautifully filmed reading of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel. Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe bring an electric chemistry to their characters which enhances all their scenes but particularly their romantic ones. Pitch perfect music score adds an extra dimension to the effectiveness of the film.

*Memorable Declaration-Under a waterfall fleeing from attacking Indians Nathaniel tells Cora when he must leave her “You be strong, you survive... You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you.”

Somewhere in Time (1980)-At the premier of his first play writer Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is approached by a mysterious old woman who presses a locket into his hand with the words “Come back to me!” Years later Collier now a successful but blocked playwright impulsively takes a trip to an old resort where he spies a picture of once famous actress Elise McKenna (a breathtakingly beautiful Jane Seymour) from 70 years hence and becomes obsessed with her. Believing she is his destiny he searches for a way to travel back to her time. Preposterous but uber romantic time travel fantasy with the well matched leads and the gorgeous Mackinac Island selling the plot’s various implausibility’s for those able to suspend belief. Very involving if you like romantic movies.

*Memorable Declaration-In the guise of the character she is portraying on stage Elise goes off script and staring straight at Richard says: “The man of my dreams has almost faded now. The one I have created in my mind. The sort of man each woman dreams of, in the deepest and most secret reaches of her heart. I can almost see him now before me. What would I say to him if he were really here? "Forgive me. I have never known this feeling. I have lived without it all my life. Is it any wonder, then, I failed to recognize you? You, who brought it to me for the first time. Is there any way I can tell you how my life has changed? Any way at all to let you know what sweetness you have given me? There is so much to say... I cannot find the words. Except for these: I love you."

    1. It's been a really interesting week hasn't it! Empire Strikes Back came to me whilst I was thinking of the more stereotypical movies, but I think Star Wars in general is still very fresh in everyone's minds!
I sadly haven't seen any of your picks, but Pride & Prejudice is a movie I've been meaning to watch for years.

  5. People need to stop picking When Harry Met Sally so that I can stop kicking myself for not picking it myself!! LOL. That entire movie is perfection.

Love Empire Strikes Back and that is easily one of the most memorable declarations of love in movies. Perfect fit for the characters and situation.

The Proposal is a very cute movie - totally a guilty pleasure for me, too - but I don't really remember that scene from it.

That scene from The Proposal is the very last one ;) Well, right before the hilarious credits scene anyway!

  7. I am amazed how popular Empire is and I am one who picked that film also:) I saw it when it first came out and everyone was waiting for something to happen and this was perfect because he is such a cad (In the most heroic and lovable way:). I love When Harry Meets Sally because it is such a fun and sweet film. My hubby and I have seen The Proposal more than once and it is a fun movie to watch..too bad she plays such an uptight Canadian:)

    1. Oh that's so awesome! If I had a time machine I'd go back to when the originals were out so I could witness them the way they should be!

  8. GREAT picks! I am so ticked I didn't think of Empire. That is one of the perfect moments in movie history. I went with When Harry Met Sally as well, since I pretty much had to. It's that good. The Proposal is a movie I've only seen in bits and pieces. My Mom LOVES that movie. I really need to sit down with it one time.

You should definitely watch The Proposal the whole way through...I'm not saying it's a cinematic masterpiece but it's so much fun! And hey, your Mom has great taste! :)
