Best and Worst: Emma Stone

What feels like a lifetime ago, I created a post about the best and worst Ryan Reynolds films I'd seen. He was a great place to start because I'd actually seen all of his films that had been released! Or at least I thought, until I remembered Turbo. Jenna and I then started frantically searching IMDB for other actors or actresses we loved, and I realised that there were only 2 Emma Stone films I'd never seen, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Marmaduke.

I want maybe be a little controversial here and say that I don't think animated films should count. Not for this anyway. I've seen Ghosts of Girlfriends Past now but I really don't think Marmaduke is going to make it into the best or worst category. If you really disagree then speak up, and I'll watch it!

I'm telling you, this was such a hard decision. I was stuck between Zombieland, Easy A and Crazy, Stupid Love. I almost resorted to a game of 'eenie meenie miney mo' to choose, but then I thought about which one I'd watched the most, and then Crazy, Stupid, Love won hands down. I actually watched this for the first time because I love Steve Carell so much, but I didn't expect to love it as much as I did.

I'll try to do a proper review for this soon, but for now I'll focus on Emma Stone. This, for me, is the role she was born to play. It's the role that made me fall in love with her and if I could pick an actress to play me in a film about my life, it would be her. She's so elegant and beautiful, and yet at the same time she's an absolute klutz and comes out with some cracking one liners. If you've never seen this, go and see it now!

When I first heard about Movie 43 I was really excited. The cast looked amazing! I actually thought it would be a sort of spoof on Love Actually, and that the individual stories would tie in at the end, but no. It was just a series of sketches ranging from actually kind of funny to just plain awkward. Never again will I look at Hugh Jackman in the same way. I think it shows how bad this film is when my favourite sketch was done by an actor who I just really can't stand, Stephen Merchant.

Emma Stone's section wasn't too bad actually to be honest. It was pretty funny to begin with, but then it just turned a little awkward. I've lent Jenna the DVD and for her benefit, it's most definitely NSFD!

Here's just a little shout-out to some of Emma Stone's other great roles:

  1. Whoa, blasphemy! Not a fan of Stephen Merchant? :O Plus, what's NSFD? That might be a stupid questions :P Great post Allie, Emma is one of my favourite actresses also. I'd say Easy A ranks as my favourite movie of hers.

    1. He winds me up and I can't even tell you why! Actually I could, he reminds me a lot of an ex! I was so torn between Easy A and Crazy, Stupid, Love that it practically went down to a coin toss, I love them both!
I don't know if this link will work but we have our own versions of NSFW, this should explain it! http://flick-chicks.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-meaning-of-nsft-nsfp-and-nsfd.html

  2. I've never seen Movie 43, but I loved loved loved Crazy Stupid Love, it was unusually warm and poignant for American romantic comedy. Stone was great there, she is always so charming.

    1. It's up there with my favourite romantic comedys of all time. I've bought so many copies now as gifts for family and friends!
      Thanks for commenting :)

  3. I love Stone! I haven't seen Movie 23 despite starring like every actor ever...mostly because those reviews were AWFUL! I would agree on your best, movie wise, but for me her performance in Easy A was outstanding (and should have netted her an Oscar nomination!)

    1. I think everyone should witness Movie 43, just so that we can all hold hands and help each other through the 90 minutes of our lives we'll never get back! I completely agree about Easy A, my mind changed every minute whether to have it as my number 1 :)

  4. Hmm, I've actually seen Movie 43, and have a similar opinion on the movie as a whole as you do. That said, even though I recall Emma Stone being in the movie, I seriously can't recall which sketch she was even in, which probably says alot.

Really fun post, though. Emma Stone really is a good go-to actor who I can't recall ever giving a bad performance. She caught my attention with Zombieland, and has been impressing me ever since. I need to see Crazy Stupid Love, though. That's one I've still just haven't gotten around to.

(Also haven't seen Marmaduke, but as for animated roles in general counting, I'd say they should, as say, for instance, Vin Diesel's best roles happen to typically come in animated form. ;) )

Also, if you guys don't mind, I actually wouldn't mind borrowing this concept for my own blog at some point down the line. :)

    1. Hah, it was only a really short sketch she was in. She was a customer at a convenience store getting inappropriate with the cashier :)
I really would recommend Crazy Stupid Love, it's a rom-com that even guys can enjoy!
And thanks for throwing that in there, you can expect a review for Marmaduke to pop up sometime in the near future, I should have known someone would call me out on it ;)
Please feel free to use the concept, I'd love to see what you do with it!
